An Experienced Campaigner
Our Prospective Parliamentary Candidate
Loanna Morrison is the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Conservatives in the constituency of Bermondsey & Old Southwark.
Like many local long-term residents, Loanna had a cosmopolitan childhood. Born in Jamaica, she spent her childhood growing up in Italy before eventually moving to London.
She comes from a family who believe in taking an active role in the local community. Her mother worked for the Southwark Council as a warden in sheltered housing for more than 15 years. Loanna, as a single Mum brought up two children on her own. She takes great pride in her children's successful careers in the Army Air Corps and HM Revenue and Customs.
Prior to setting up her own business she enjoyed a 20-year career in journalism, writing for national and international newspapers. She has also worked as a producer and researcher in television on programmes including Sky News.
As an experienced campaigner she is concerned about the rise of bureaucracy on small businesses across Southwark and Bermondsey and strongly believes policing should be targeted in conjunction with residents rather than be based on top down targets.
Her spare time is taken up with her family, and expanding her jazz collection. She has just completed her final year BA in Social Sciences specialising in the management of 'Cities'. She is all too aware of the problems of the densely populated inner cities.
Loanna has built a reputation in her constituency as a passionate campaigner on local issues: demanding and winning concessions for small businesses and market stallholders in Southwark to combat the credit-crunch, assisting individuals with issues like asbestos, leaks and leaseholder overcharging, winter heating compensation, re-housing and improvement in transport. She is a huge supporter of Surrey Docks Downtown-Defence-Campaign, helping locals to fight Barratts over-development. A fight they have lost because the 20year incumbent Simon Hughes said he had no influence!
Loanna also fought for a faith-based-youth-initiative co-operative project who for 3 years, were repeatedly refused planning permission for a 22,000 square-foot industrial space by Southwark council. The consent was finally given because of Loanna's persistence and dogged determination. This creative academy will be the making of many teenagers!
Loanna is now helping to attract the expertise to develop The Urban Academy of Music and Performing Arts in conjunction with the charity Kid's Company. She says, "Yes, I know it's a stereotype that black people excel in music; but if learning an instrument scoops boys off the streets and helps them acquire a valuable discipline then in this case let's encourage them because they have to start somewhere."
Loanna is diversifying her own publishing company in this disadvantageous economic climate created by Gordon Brown. Her magazines provide a forum for women and voluntary workers who are influencing and setting public and government agenda.

Under Mrs Thatcher, millions of people in this country were able to buy their own homes and given incentives to free up social housing for others in need. Now the Conservatives will build on this by:
A Right to Move - a comprehensive national mobility scheme that will allow good tenants to move to other social sector properties.
Supporting the low-cost housing sector measures will include strengthening shared ownership schemes so that those on intermediate incomes can part-own their home.
Local Housing Trusts - villages and towns will be able to create entirely new community-led bodies with planning powers to develop local homes for local people, provided there is strong community backing.
Breaking the monopoly on empty government property - local people will have new powers to demand the selling of empty or under-used government property.
Stopping the Whitehall imposition of unwanted development - regional planning will be scrapped, enabling councils to revise their plans to protect Green Belt land and prevent the unwanted imposition of so-called eco-towns.
Our Green Deal - will provide all families with the opportunity to improve their homes without any up front cost.
Energy efficiency is a triple win for the whole country; it saves money, it saves energy and its saves our environment, not to mention tackling fuel poverty.
Shadow Housing Minister grant Shapps said, We need social housing that promotes opportunity and social mobility, rather than reinforcing welfare dependency. And we need a compassionate housing policy that recognises the need to house the vulnerable and tackle the soaring waiting lists."
Were encouraging responsibility and offering opportunity through our Foot on the Ladder scheme to give all good social tenants a 10% equity stake in their home after 5 years, to be cashed in when they leave the sector and free up their home for another family.
Were promoting enterprise by ensuring that all social tenants will be able to start a business in their home.
